Slim Opgewekt
They are the only company in the Netherlands to offer primary schools a successful sustainability package: financial advice, their own financing fund, energy-saving modifications to the building and solar panels, accompanied by an educational approach developed in-house for pupils. Slim Opgewekt does it. Meanwhile, 85 primary schools are on green electricity, they are working on a large project for secondary schools and are already expanding to sports clubs and healthcare institutions.
It can be done
Slim Opgewekt is a company with a profitable business model, but its main goal is to achieve sustainability. Hilde van Dijk, one of the four founders explains: "We thought the cut-off between doing something good for the world and running a healthy business was outdated. We were therefore looking for a business model that is scalable and can achieve sustainability."
Because the projects they set up are large, they can buy the solar panels directly from the factory. This leaves them with a margin with which they can offer all the service from their own organisation. "We looked at what primary schools need to become more sustainable and decided to do everything in one house: from installation to advice, supply, management as well as awareness-raising."
A good start
"The people here in the region who work at the knowledge institutions and the government believed in us and gave us assignments, which helped us so much! I found that just trusting in your cause is the most important thing."
Energy meets Education
They figured they could make the most impact at schools where you reach future generations. Slim Opgewekt themselves developed the energy screens that show pupils how much energy has already been generated and saved. They also devised the Educube, a dynamic LED lighting system that allows teachers to connect the light in their classroom to the lesson activity in no time.
