Modderkolk

Modderkolk is an installation company specialising in industrial automation, system integration and installation engineering. Based in Wijchen, the organisation has been making a significant contribution to advancing the water sector, industry and healthcare for over 100 years. Modderkolk runs an in-house training centre and supports regional, cultural and sporting initiatives. Furthermore, Modderkolk promotes technical growth in the region through its innovative Technoforum facility. All these regional efforts earned Modderkolk the23rd Parel Award on 4 October 2024. The award was presented by Jan van Dellen, director of The Economic Board Regio Arnhem-Nijmegen, and Martijn Derks, councillor for the municipality of Wijchen:

"Modderkolk started with home connections and has continued to develop in industry and healthcare. Through Simon de Luij's entrepreneurship, Modderkolk continues to develop innovatively. Because Simon immerses himself in people, the environment and society, Modderkolk is now where it stands. Back in 2012, he started his own Academy because he believes it is important for young people to have sufficient opportunities to develop further in technology. Early 2023 saw the launch of SPARK!, of which Modderkolk is also a part, and now we are on the eve of the opening of the Junior Technovium Wijchen technology centre. Entrepreneurs like Simon are important. Wijchen = Strong Together, Wijchen = Entrepreneurship Together."

The art of technology

Modderkolk adheres to the vision ‘we understand the art of engineering’ and focuses on delivering valuable technical solutions in three sectors: water, industry and healthcare. Director Simon de Luij emphasises that they aim to take all the hassle off their clients’ hands: “Engineering is our passion, but we understand better than anyone that our clients want to focus on their core business.” Their core values – approachable, expert, straightforward and resourceful – form the guiding principles for future decisions.

To realise this vision, Modderkolk invests in the knowledge development of their professionals via the Modderkolk Academy and works with specialised customer teams. "This way we put our customers first, they always have a fixed point of contact and we ensure the best quality: on time, within budget and above expectations," Simon says.

Water is Modderkolk's first specialisation. Here, the organisation contributes to solutions for challenges such as climate change and water quality. They support drinking water companies and government bodies with sustainable and cost-efficient electrical installations, often powered by solar energy.

The second branch is industrial automation, system integration and installation technology for industry. Here, Modderkolk supports industrial companies with advice, engineering and installation of process automation systems, low- and high-voltage electrical installations, machine controls and panel building. They also help customers on a daily basis with service, maintenance and periodic safety inspections. They also provide courses and training on electrotechnical safety in their Technoforum.

Finally, Modderkolk supports healthcare by providing more efficient technical maintenance, including design, realisation, and management of hospital wards and operating theatres. With a self-developed technical management tool, they can monitor conditions in operating theatres from their headquarters in Wijchen.

Meeting place for technology

Technoforum in Wijchen is Modderkolk's home base: "An innovative environment, where together with other organisations we purposefully tackle the challenges of ageing and energy transition. We also want to stimulate the technical growth and prosperity of the region. Therefore, we facilitate meeting places, office and conference rooms. In this way, we hope to create a vibrant community where technology, innovation and cooperation come together!"

Modderkolk is also realising a technology classroom for children in collaboration with SPARK! Wijchen. Simon: "In the Techlab, children between 10 and 15 years old are face-to-face with the possibilities of technology. This allows them to discover their interests and talents in engineering."

23e Parel-award

This is the twenty-third time that The Economic Board has presented the Pearl award. The award goes to companies and organisations that, according to The Economic Board, stand out because of interesting innovations or, on the contrary, because of their proven business processes.
