Pearl

HCM Medical

An implant that grows with the body. That is what the team at HCM Medical creates. The company develops and produces medical implants made of biological tissue; a sustainable alternative to metal and plastic. Thanks to their innovative method, circular approach and growing impact, HCM Medical received the Lifeport Pearl Award, which was presented by Ilko Bosman:

"We are proud that HCM Medical, today on Entrepreneur's Day, has been named a Pearl of Lifeport: a leading health innovator from our region - receiving the Pearl of Lifeport. They show how health, technology, sustainability and circularity can exist together in one enterprise, demonstrating the entrepreneurial strength that is putting Lifeport Regio Arnhem Nijmegen on the map worldwide."

Organic and circular

Whereas many implants are made of synthetic material, HCM Medical opts for natural raw materials: human donor tissue and carefully processed animal tissue. That material the body recognises as its own, allowing it to grow in and eventually be fully absorbed. This makes healing faster and more natural.

"Suppose a patient has had a tumour in the bone," explains founder Christian van Munster. "Then you can place a new piece of bone. The body uses our implants as a matrix to form new bone. Over time, that new bone is completely the body's own."

Besides implants, HCM Medical also develops collagen products for wound healing and aesthetic applications. Here, residual material from the slaughter chain is reused: a circular solution that adds medical value.

Innovative and high-tech

Production takes place in high-tech clean rooms and specialised laboratories. There, the team uses a special technique: supercritical CO₂. "That is a cleaning method with the dissolving power of a liquid and the penetrating power of a gas," says Christian. "This allows us to clean tissue completely without chemical treatment. It's cleaner, safer and better for the environment."

Cooperation in the region

HCM Medical cooperates intensively with Radboud University and other regional partners. Students do internships there, they share equipment and knowledge flows both ways. "The level of thinking in this region is very high," says Van Munster. "We learn from each other every day and that is very pleasant work."

A well-deserved Pearl

With their combination of medical innovation, circular production and regional cooperation, HCM Medical shows what the healthcare of the future can look like.
