In the Lifeport Arnhem-Nijmegen region, sustainability is a common thread running through all social and economic challenges. This ambition is also clearly evident in the area of entrepreneurship. For SMEs in particular, there are both opportunities and challenges at the intersection of innovation, mobility and sustainability. The introduction of the zero-emission zone in Arnhem brings this shift into sharp focus: it demands new choices, but at the same time offers scope for smart, future-proof solutions that make an impact both locally and regionally.
Arnhem is taking an important step towards a sustainable and future-proof city centre. A zero-emission zone was introduced on 1 June 2026, through which the council is actively promoting cleaner urban transport and a healthier living environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
Impact on businesses and logistics
The introduction of the zero-emission zone means that businesses must rethink their logistics strategies. Delivery vans and lorries that produce emissions will be phased out gradually. By 2030, only zero-emission vehicles will be permitted in Arnhem city centre. This transition requires investment, innovation and collaboration within the region.
Nermina Kundić, Councillor for the Economy and Sustainable Mobility:
“This provides clarity: anyone already familiar with the environmental zone will also know where the zero-emission zone will apply. Within this zone, delivery vans and lorries will ultimately only be permitted if they produce no emissions. The introduction of the zero-emission zone ties in with the existing environmental zone, where stricter requirements will also apply to polluting diesel vehicles from that point onwards. The aim is cleaner air and a more pleasant city centre for working, living and doing business.”
A phased transition with scope for customisation
To give businesses time to adapt, Arnhem has opted for a phased introduction. A transitional arrangement will remain in place until 1 January 2030, under which the cleanest vehicles will retain access to the city centre for the longest period. In addition, it will remain possible to apply for exemptions, for example where a switch is not yet feasible or where a suitable zero-emission alternative is not yet available.
Working together on smart solutions
The municipality of Arnhem is actively seeking to collaborate with businesses. Through advisory programmes and meetings, companies are supported in the transition. At the same time, innovative solutions are being explored, such as consolidating goods flows and utilising zero-emission logistics service providers. This approach not only reduces emissions but also contributes to more efficient and future-proof urban logistics.
Wide-ranging impact on quality of life and the economy
With the zero-emission zone, Arnhem is working towards more than just cleaner transport. The measure contributes to better air quality, less noise pollution and a more attractive city centre. This creates an environment in which entrepreneurs can operate more effectively, talent is keen to settle, and innovative solutions are given the space to develop.
